OCD and Creativity

I am a firm believer in letting our weird show. Well… now I am. Not always did I feel like this. Which is why I tried to tame my own instead of letting it roar. My weird contains quirks that I didn’t have quite a grasp on. I have always thought of myself as creative though. My imagination is a quality that I cherish. Creativity comes with weird, creativity comes with OCD, how else can we explain what we do? OCD and creativity – A blessing in disguise?

Everybody loves the booty. We cherish the booty, we seek the booty, we work hard for the booty. When we get the booty, we claim it as our own in victory. It’s our reward for all of the pirates we had to chop down for it. No one wants to deal with pirates, but it’s what it takes to get our paws on that treasure.

We are all seeking it and pirates are out there seeking it too, all the while placing the biggest obstacles in our path. Obsessive Compulsive Disorder is like the Pirate you can’t seem to escape from. It’s behind you, in front of you, on both sides of you, while you have a fist-clinch of booty.

Just like booty, creativity is heavily sought after. It’s admired by all and you with it don’t want to let it go. Because it’s a blessing, a gift, a rarity worth it’s weight in gold.

You grab that first one and it’s a display of fireworks of happy emotions. It brings you so much joy, it’s the best piece of chocolate you’ve ever had. You now cannot get enough so you reach for another. I gots to have more, but which one was it?

Blah… it wasn’t that one. Ew… not that one either. Yuck… was that a raisin? Whose bright idea was it to sneak in a raisin? Oh no, that raisin taste is stuck in my mouth. Quickly reach for another piece of… OMG! Now I have raisin and toothpaste taste in my mouth. What in all the fuck cocoa sticks was that? Toothpaste covered chocolate does not belong in this assortment of chocolates or any other assortment of anything.

THIS IS SO WRONG!

But you reach for another in search of that perfect taste again. It’s like… you can’t help it, you can’t resist, you must find it or everything else is ruined. That’s OCD and creativity for ya! OCD is the raisin and toothpaste, while creativity is the fine rich delectable chocolate smothering it all. It’s that OCD perk, the bright side, the booty of this disorderly mind-pecker.

OCD:

Hannah Gudrun puts it perfectly here where she states ‘OCD is clever—it is the most persuasive force I’ve ever come across.’ It is most definitely clever and because of it, we are provided a great weapon which both feeds and fends it off.

When we reside in our head this often, we see weird shit. We flip that weird shit into even weirder shit. Honestly, that’s the part I love. I own my weird all day, it is what makes me me. It’s mine – not yours, and yours is yours – not mine. Run with it.

It’s the disorderly part that we cringe at. Everyone should want better, there’s nothing wrong at all for wanting better for yourself. OCD, the non perk parts, is what torments us, holds us prisoner, keeping us restrained from even being partially ourselves. That’s the part we battle with as a result.

Creativity:

Creativity – one of the 16 signs of OCD pointed out in an earlier publishing.

It is our weapon of choice and chosen for us by our OCD. Makes me believe it is meant for defeating. It knows how clever it is, at the same time, it is playing with fire, taunting us, daring us to win. All while pointing out everyone else’s flaws but it’s own – reasoning. Cocky isn’t it.

OCD uses our creativity against us, cleverly and cockily. If it has the power to flip our words, our thoughts, and perception, then we have the power to flip that shit right back in it’s face – creatively.
